"KAZAKH BASE FOR AVIATION PROTECTION OF FORESTS AND FOREST SERVICE"
Regular site version
The season of wildfires has begun in the south-eastern part of Kazakhstan. Numerous foci are recorded in the lower part of the Ili River delta - the largest waterway of the Semirechye. Reeds are burning there, the correspondent of Khabar 24 reports. Fires harm the environment. Migratory birds, which are now preparing for nesting, are particularly affected. From the side of the patrol aircraft "Kazavialesoohrana" very spectacular views open up. The southern shore of Lake Balkhash is still covered with a layer of ice, which is actively melting. But further south, the average daily temperatures are almost summer. In terms of fire danger, April is considered one of the hottest months of the year. The young vegetation has not yet risen, and last year's has already dried up in the sun. It is an excellent combustible material.
Grigory Bedenko, correspondent:
- For air patrol of the delta of the river Or specialists of "Kazavialesoohrana" use a light twin-engine aircraft Partenavia P-68. This machine is capable of being in the air for up to 5 hours, which allows you to cover vast territories with monitoring. Similar fires occur due to the fault of the local population, too. There are about a dozen and a half peasant farms in the Balkhash district of the Almaty region. All of them mainly practice animal husbandry. And every spring, when the snow comes down, shepherds set fire to dry grass. The fire clears the territories for pastures, and the ashes serve as an excellent fertilizer. At the same time, no one observes any safety rules. Kazavialesookhrana specialists explain to local residents every year that agricultural fires must be carried out before the start of the fire season. But these recommendations are mostly not taken into account.
Yakubzhan Ibragimov, pilot-observer of the Almaty branch of Kazavialesoohrana:
- Now at the moment we have a fire hazard class of the fourth-fifth already. Every day we do two or three departures by plane. These fires are very difficult to extinguish. By helicopter with the APU, too. Such forces are needed there, such hours, such expenses are needed. It is almost impossible to extinguish such fires. Fires in the reeds cause huge damage to the fauna of the Balkhash region. There are many lakes, and these are the habitats of many species of waterfowl. In April, swans and pink pelicans, listed in the Red Book, arrive in the delta Or. Fire destroys everything in its path, birds sitting on nests have no chance to escape at all. The muskrat is dying. Dry reeds. This is almost one hundred percent cellulose. During gorenje tons of soot are emitted into the atmosphere, and the smoke column from the fire can be observed for tens of kilometers.
Yakubzhan Ibragimov, pilot-observer of the Almaty branch of Kazavialesoohrana:
- Now the spring period is the flight of a bird. It is in such places that birds nest. Mostly ducks, swans, pelicans. It is in such places that they have nests, where they lay eggs. And, of course, after such fires there is a lot of damage. The main task of Kazavialesookhrana is to detect a fire in time and transmit the exact coordinates to ground services. The extinguishing of the main foci is carried out by the workers of peasant farms themselves, employees of forestry enterprises and units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations. But in most cases, it is impossible to completely eliminate fires in reeds. Some sites are located on islands or in swampy areas where equipment will not pass. It remains only to wait for precipitation, but it rarely falls in the delta or. According to experts, the intensity of these fires will decrease in about a month, when the old reeds will burn out and the young vegetation will grow.
