FOREST FIRES IN KAZAKHSTAN: HOW THE AVIATION RESCUE DAYS GO

In Kazakhstan, the peak of forest fires is observed. Since the beginning of the year, about 200 fires have been recorded. The situation is monitored daily from the air. Kirill Kharlamov, correspondent of MIR 24, went on a raid with aviation rescuers.
In the Almaty region, plus 40. This is the fifth - the highest class of fire danger. The Ili River is a popular holiday destination for tourists. Due to careless handling of fire, reeds often burn here. Planes fly to the area every day.
They patrol the area on the AN-2. It can fly at low altitude at a speed of 180 kilometers per hour. This allows the pilot-observer to notice any detail of the landscape.
Information about the fire is transmitted to the ground via radio communication and a special mobile application. And organize the extinguishing as soon as possible. The damage from forest fires is catastrophic.
"The forest grows for years. It may take a century to fully restore the area where the flame of fire has passed. These are millions and billions of expenses for elimination,” said Talgat Aliyev, Acting General Director of Kazavialesoohrana.
At Burundai airport, paratroopers-firefighters conduct aerial training. They put out fires in hard-to-reach areas. The exercises are testing a new type of trigger device. Specialists constantly confirm their qualifications. Descents pass from 40-meter height.
"People promptly land directly on the edge of the fire and immediately start extinguishing the fire,” said Sergey Polyakov, head of the air fire service of Kazavialesokhrana.
The helicopter crew is also training. The pilot-observer on board is practicing accuracy. Five tons of water must fall exactly on the source of the fire.
Up to 1,500 forest fires occur annually in Kazakhstan. In early June, a major fire broke out in the east of the republic, a relict pine forest burned there. The fire destroyed about 250 hectares of forest.

ON JUNE 9, 2022, AIR TRAINING OF THE AIRBOATING AND FIRE GROUPS OF THE ALMATY AND TALDYKORGAN AVIATION DEPARTMENT WAS PASSED

The personnel of the Almaty and Taldykorgan aviation departments underwent air training with the aim of thorough and comprehensive training, working out all the elements of the descent, studying various techniques and training in their implementation. Experienced mentors - heads of aviation departments and pilot-observers - worked out the practical skills of the "forest special forces".
It should be noted that it is not always possible to get to the area of an active forest fire by ground transport, and when delivering forces and means by aviation, it is not always possible to select a site for a safe landing. In such cases, a decision is made to land troops in the fire area using a helicopter. The pilot-observer from the air selects a site suitable for the descent of paratroopers-firefighters, not less than 5x5 meters in size between the crowns of trees.
It should be noted that such training descents are held annually - at the beginning and in the middle of the fire season. It is extremely important to remember the technique of descending from a helicopter after the winter break and to consolidate the acquired skills, because this is one of the foundations for the safety of forest aviation work. The helicopter hovers over this "well” at a height of at least 10 meters above the treetops (while the height to the ground should not exceed 45 meters). The pilot-observer opens the door and drops a particularly strong (900 kg to break) 50-meter cord, along which firefighters descend directly from the helicopter to the ground with the help of a descender roller device.
During the training, the interaction of the pilot-observer and paratroopers-firefighters, the speed of descent (average - three meters per second), correct landing and much more are monitored.
Pilot-observers also practiced the accuracy of draining water onto the fire with the help of a spillway device (APU). It should be noted that work with the spillway device is difficult and dangerous and requires high training of the flight crew.
